Period:
Ordovician, Cambrian

Age Interval:
Early Ordovician-Late Cambrian

Province:
Myanmar Shan Region

Type Locality and Naming

Shan Mid Plateau, (Pyin Oo Lwin), the Ngwetaung Gr is here formally upgraded from the Ngwetaung Fm of Garson et al. (1976) following research by Hla Myint (pers. comm. 1984), and is named after Ngwetaung Hill located about 19 km east of Mandalay. [Original Publication: Barber, A. J., Khin Zaw & Crow, M. J. (eds) 2017. Myanmar: Geology, Resources and Tectonics. Geological Society, London, Memoirs, 48, 317-342]

Lithology and Thickness

Sandstone. Within the group there are two previously informal units of formation rank: the Sibaing Orthoquartzite Fm and Taunggyun Sandstone Fm. As the names imply, the group consists essentially of orthoquartzites in the lower part and ferruginous micaceous sandstones in the upper part.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformable with Taunggyun Sandstone Fm

Upper contact

Conformable with Sibaing Orthoquartzite Fm

Regional extent

This Gr is developed in Mid part of Shan Plateau.
